The rosette shapes of this succulent's foliage stand out not only thanks to their stunning colour, which sees the usual blue-green tinted with pink at the edges in summer, but also because of the texture of the leaves. Bordered with frills, the edges of this plant's leaves almost look delicate - whilst still being strong enough to store water for the plant. These pretty leaves are a valuable addition to any collection, from beginner to succulent enthusiast, and given a bright windowsill position and not too much water they can thrive in your home. In summer you may even see coral flowers produced on a tall flower spike, so keep your eyes peeled!

Scientific Name
Echeveria shaviana (Echeverría's Plant, Shavi's species)

This plant's name was first published in 1972

Common Name(s)
Pink Frills, Mexican Hens and Chicks, Mexican Hens

Origin
Native to the mountainous regions of northeastern Mexico, where it grows in pine needles on shaded boulders

Light
Prefers bright light; will benefit from a few hours of direct sun per day. Best kept near a south or west-facing window. If you're moving it from low to high light, do so gradually to prevent sunburn.

Water
Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. During the active growing season (spring and summer), water thoroughly; reduce watering in autumn and winter as it will dry out more slowly.

Humidity
Prefers dry air and does not need extra humidity. Avoid misting as excess moisture on the leaves can cause rot.

Soil
Use a well-draining cactus or succulent mix, incorporating sand or perlite for added drainage. Ensure the pot has drainage holes to prevent waterlogging. Repot every couple of years as the plant grows.

Food
Feed every 4-6 weeks during the growing season with a diluted cactus and succulent fertiliser. Do not fertilise in autumn and winter.

Temperature
Thrives in temperatures between 18-26°C but can tolerate cooler conditions down to 7°C. Protect from frost and cold draughts.

Pet-safe
Yes, but too much nibbling won't be good for pets, small humans or the plant!

Sprouts Top Tips
Remove any dead or shrivelled leaves at the base of the plant to maintain its neat appearance and prevent pests. Keep an eye out for pests, especially around new growth and flower stems.

Extras
This plant’s colour intensity increases with more sunlight, showcasing brighter pinks on the frilled edges. A sunny windowsill can bring out its best tones.

Did You Know?
Echeveria shaviana is often referred to as ‘the succulents’ ballerina’ due to its delicate, ruffled leaf edges that resemble a tutu.

These Bamboo Pillowcases Made Me Realize I Sleep Hot
    Color: 07 - Cream, Size: Queen (20" X 30"), Color: 07 - Cream, Size: Queen (20" X 30")
I bought these mostly because I kept hearing people talk about bamboo pillowcases and honestly thought it sounded a little overhyped, but I totally get it now. The first thing I noticed was how cool they felt compared to regular cotton. I tend to get warm when I sleep and flip my pillow a million times during the night looking for the cold side, and these actually stay noticeably cooler longer. They also feel really soft without having that weird slippery texture some silky pillowcases have. My skin has been less irritated lately and my hair definitely looks less frizzy in the mornings. I have thick hair that tangles easily overnight, and these have helped more than I expected. Another thing I appreciate is that they’ve washed well so far. I was worried they’d pill or lose softness after a wash cycle, but they still feel smooth and nice. They also just make the bed feel cleaner and more comfortable overall. One of those small upgrades that ends up making a bigger difference than you’d think.
